I had the opportunity to curate my first exhibition for the Leica Gallery Heidelberg with a selection of original gelatin silver prints of Elliott Erwitt, currently part of the Leica Archive in Wetzlar. Erwitt has always been one of my favourite photographers whose museum interior series I first encountered during my BA studies as part of an institutional criticism research project. The selection in the Leica Gallery entails exactly one of those images, however is joined by some iconic and less well known works depicting cherished moments of his private life, which Erwitt selected as his personal best for Leica.

Spanning nearly six decades, from 1946 to 2003, the exhibition traces Erwitt’s photographic journeys across continents and cultures. From post-war New York and Paris to the streets of Barcelona, the landscapes of Wyoming, and the cities of Kyoto and Rio de Janeiro, the photographs offer a multifaceted perspective on people, places, and everyday life. What excites me most about Erwitt’s work is his ability to move between significant historical moments and seemingly ordinary situations, approaching both with empathy, subtle humour, and a unique sense of timing.
